In 3D Ultra Lionel TrainTown (and TrainTown Deluxe), creating custom track layouts is done through the free-play sandbox mode, known as Build Parks in the original release and Layout Tinkerer in the Deluxe version.
1.Select a Build Park / Layout Tinkerer Level:Open the free-play sandbox mode.
-
From the main menu, go to the job roster screen.
-
Open the Build Parks job bin (or Layout Tinkerer in TrainTown Deluxe).
-
Choose an environment theme for your layout:
-
Indoor themes: Living Room, The Backyard, Kitchen, or Basement.
-
Outdoor/Sci-Fi themes: Oak Valley, Cactus Valley, North Pole, or Purple Moon / Planet X.
-
-
Launch the level. Unlike mission jobs, these stages have no timer, no required objectives, and no cargo quotas.
2.Lay and Snap Track Pieces:Assemble continuous rail loops.
-
Open the Track Palette from the bottom toolbar.
-
Toggle Smart Track on. This enables automatic snapping so track segments lock together cleanly as you place them.
-
Choose your track components:
-
Straights & Curves: Connect standard straights and turns (wide-radius curves are available in Deluxe).
-
Switches & Intersections: Place 2-way turnouts, 90° crossovers, or diagonal slants to create sidings and passing loops.
-
Special Track: Add turntables, bascule drawbridges, or elevated inclines.
-
-
Make sure all track loops are closed or terminated with end-bumpers to keep trains from running off the line.
3.Place Scenery & Interactive Accessories:Add structures, vegetation, and signals.
-
Open the Scenery Palette to select background structures.
-
Drop buildings onto the map—such as train depots, warehouses, cookie factories, or Eiffel Tower kits.
-
Place interactive machinery: Add working rotary dumpers, loading cranes, turntables, or drawbridges.
-
Add Signals & Semaphores:
-
Drop permanent semaphores onto track junctions to create automatic stop/go zones.
-
Right-click near track bumpers to place manual one-shot red/blue flag signals.
-
4.Spawn Locomotives and Freight Cars:Choose engines and rolling stock.
-
Open the Train Palette.
-
Drag an engine onto an active track section:
-
Locomotives: 2-8-0 Steam Engine, Union Pacific Switcher Diesel, Santa Fe F3A Diesel, or Commuter Railcar.
-
-
Drag train cars directly behind the engine or onto sidings:
-
Cars: Boxcars, flatbeds, gondolas, tank cars, stockcars, or passenger cars.
-
5.Switch to Play Mode & Run Your Layout:Drive trains, switch tracks, and move cargo.
-
Click the Run / Drive button on the bottom toolbar to unpause time.
-
Click the engine to set throttle levels and direction.
-
Click track switches ahead of time to redirect moving trains across your custom loops and sidings.
-
Back up cars into factories or loading docks to pick up and drop off interactive cargo (logs, cars, cattle, or coal).
