Microsoft Edge contains hidden flags (edge://flags) and system toggles that optimize how the browser decodes WebRTC video streams and processes user inputs for Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud).
1. Core Microsoft Edge Flags (edge://flags)
Type edge://flags into the address bar, search for the following flags, adjust their settings, and click Relaunch.
Hardware Video Decoding & Rendering Flags
-
#enable-gpu-rasterization→ Set toEnabled-
What it does: Forces the GPU (rather than the CPU) to rasterize web elements and stream overlays.
-
Benefit: Free up CPU cycles, lowering frame-pacing micro-stutters during heavy action.
-
-
#zero-copy-video-capture→ Set toEnabled-
What it does: Writes incoming WebRTC video frames directly into GPU memory buffers without first passing through system RAM.
-
Benefit: Eliminates a memory copy step, saving 5–15 ms of video decoding latency.
-
-
#choose-angle-graphics-backend→ Set toD3D11on12orD3D11-
What it does: Changes the underlying graphics abstraction layer Edge uses to render WebGL/WebRTC streams.
-
Benefit: Default OpenGL or Vulkan wrappers in Chromium can cause input delay on Windows. Direct3D 11/12 offers the lowest input-to-display latency on NVIDIA/AMD/Intel graphics drivers on Windows 11.
-
-
#override-software-rendering-list→ Set toEnabled-
What it does: Overrides Chromium’s internal built-in GPU blocklists.
-
Benefit: Forces hardware acceleration even on older or integrated GPUs (like Intel HD graphics) that might otherwise fall back to laggy software decoding.
-
2. In-Stream & Native Edge Features
Enable "Clarity Boost"
Clarity Boost uses spatial upscaling algorithms built directly into Edge to sharpen the compressed 1080p video stream coming from xCloud servers.
-
Start a game stream on
[xbox.com/play](https://xbox.com/play). -
Click the "..." (More Actions) menu icon in the top-left corner of the stream.
-
Toggle Clarity Boost to ON.
Enable High-Performance Graphics in Edge Settings
-
Go to
edge://settings/system. -
Ensure Use graphics acceleration when available is toggled ON.
-
Ensure Efficiency Mode is turned OFF while gaming, as it throttles browser CPU background threads.
3. Windows 11 GPU Preference Override
Ensure Windows assigns Microsoft Edge to your high-performance discrete GPU rather than an integrated graphics chip:
-
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
-
Under Custom options for apps, locate Microsoft Edge (or browse to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe). -
Click Options and select High Performance (selecting your discrete NVIDIA/AMD GPU).
-
Save and restart Edge.
4. Advanced Community Tool: Better xCloud
While not a native flag, the open-source script Better xCloud is widely considered essential for power users streaming via Microsoft Edge:
-
Higher Bitrate: Forces xCloud to stream at high-profile bitrates (up to 15–20 Mbps instead of the default 9–12 Mbps cap).
-
Region/Server Selection: Allows manual selection of the lowest-ping xCloud data center rather than relying on auto-routing.
-
Codec Selection: Forces hardware H.264 or AV1 decoding depending on your GPU’s optimal hardware capabilities.
